In an exclusive interview with Tube & Pipe India, Mr. Gopakumar Varma, Senior Vice President & BU Head – Tubular Solutions, Lalbaba Engineering Limited, outlines how Lalbaba Engineering is helping reposition India as a technology-led, globally trusted engineering partner. He highlights the company’s vertically integrated capabilities in cold-finished seamless tubes, focus on high-precision and safety-critical applications, and evolution from cost competitiveness to quality- and process-driven manufacturing. The conversation also explores India’s growing role in turnkey engineering solutions, Indo-global technology collaborations, expanding international market presence, and sustainable manufacturing practices.

Tube & Pipe India: What will you showcase at Tube Düsseldorf to highlight India’s technological capabilities and manufacturing excellence to a global audience?
Gopakumar Varma: At Tube Düsseldorf, Lalbaba will showcase its carbon, alloy and stainless-steel tubular solutions, highlighting India’s ability to manufacture high-precision, safety-critical seamless tubes for global applications. As India’s largest manufacturer of cold-finished seamless tubes, Lalbaba operates as a vertically integrated solution provider, controlling the entire value chain from hot preparation to final testing. Our presence will thereby reflect how Indian manufacturing has evolved from capacity-driven production to technology-led, quality-focused engineering, capable of meeting stringent international standards across diverse industries like automotive, railways, energy, industrial sectors and more.
TPI: International trade fairs play a crucial role in shaping industry collaborations. How do platforms like Tube Düsseldorf help Indian manufacturers connect with global markets and customers?
GV: Platforms like Tube Düsseldorf serve as global collaboration hubs, enabling Indian manufacturers to engage directly with international OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and technology partners. These forums facilitate technology exchange, co-development, and long-term strategic sourcing, helping Indian companies integrate more deeply into global supply chains. For Indian manufacturers like us, such platforms also help build credibility and trust, showcasing not just cost competitiveness but process maturity, compliance, and performance reliability, which are critical for long-term global partnerships.
TPI: From your participation at Tube Düsseldorf, what key global market insights are you hoping to gain and bring back to strengthen India’s tube and pipe manufacturing ecosystem?
GV: Our participation in Tube Dusseldorf is expected to enable us gain deeper insights into evolving global demand patterns, emerging applications, and technology trends shaping the tube and pipe industry. Against the backdrop of the India–EU FTA, a strong demand environment combined with India’s growing manufacturing and supply capabilities positions the country as a preferred sourcing destination.
These learnings will help us identify opportunities in higher value-added tubular components and sub-assemblies, where Indian manufacturers can play a vital role by offering sustainable, reliable, and cost-competitive solutions aligned with global market expectations.
TPI: Over the years, how have you seen India’s representation evolve at international trade fairs, and how do you contribute to strengthening India’s image as a global engineering hub?
GV: India’s representation at international trade fairs has evolved from being cost-focused to capability-driven. Today, Indian companies are recognised for engineering competence, quality systems, and adherence to global standards.
Lalbaba contributes to this shift by showcasing complex, high-performance tubular products, transparent quality processes, and globally benchmarked manufacturing practices — reinforcing India’s position as a trusted global engineering and manufacturing hub.

As India’s largest manufacturer of cold-finished seamless tubes, Lalbaba operates as a vertically integrated solution provider, controlling the entire value chain from hot preparation to final testing.
TPI: What core Indian manufacturing strengths differentiate you on the global stage? For what turnkey solutions is the world looking at India?
GV: India’s key differentiation lies in its ability to combine engineering excellence with cost-effective innovation. At Lalbaba, we have established this through our continuous cold drawing process, which as compared to conventional cold drawing, integrates the complete cold-drawn seamless (CDS) tube manufacturing lifecycle into a single, streamlined flow. This process is our key USP that results in tighter dimensional tolerances, superior material characteristics and application-specific performance across automotive, railways, energy, and industrial engineering in faster cycle times.
Globally, India is being looked at for turnkey engineering solutions with end-to-end support right from design to advanced manufacturing, system integration, testing, commissioning and lifecycle services. Following this, Lalbaba has expanded into turnkey modernisation programs in the railways sector through our Rail Solutions-as-a-Service (RSaaS) model under which we deliver end-to-end solutions covering system upgrades, lifecycle support and performance assurance to meet market demand of one-stop solution.
TPI: Technology partnerships and acquisitions are critical today. How are Indo-global collaborations helping reinforce India’s engineering leadership?
GV: Indo-global collaborations play a vital role in strengthening India’s engineering game by combining global expertise with Indian ingenuity and skill. A key example is Indo Deutsch Precision Tubes (IDPT) — Lalbaba’s joint venture with Poppe + Potthoff GmbH, Germany. Operating a state-of-the-art precision CDS tube line in Badli, Haryana, IDPT supplies fuel-injection lines, steering tubes and structural components to Tier-1 automotive OEMs. This partnership enhances India’s global credibility by reducing import dependence & delivering world-class automotive tubular solutions manufactured in India.
TPI: Which international regions do you see as strategic growth markets, and how is India positioned as your global manufacturing base to support these expansions?
GV: Lalbaba has established a strong and growing presence across Europe as well as North and South America, which continue to be key strategic markets for us. With recent approvals from KNPC, KOC, and ADNOC, we have further strengthened our footprint in the Middle East. In parallel, Australia represents an important growth market, particularly for mining-focused solutions, and forms a core part of our long-term global expansion strategy.
India serves as our global manufacturing and engineering base, supported by four manufacturing facilities including Indo Deutsch Precision Tubes (IDPT), a state-of-the-art R&D centre, NABL-accredited in-house laboratories and a dedicated Learning & Development centre. Backed by a workforce of over 2,000 skilled professionals, this ecosystem enables us to support diverse international markets with consistent quality, scalable capacity, and competitive lead times.
TPI: How are cost pressures across raw materials, energy, or logistics being managed without compromising product reliability or compliance?
GV: Lalbaba’s integrated manufacturing model allows tighter control over inputs, energy use, and production planning so that cost pressures are addressed rather than compromising on quality. With our initiatives of “ Manufacturing Excellence (TPM/Lean Manufacturing)”, we are confident of improving the operational efficiency and bringing down the cost and delivering a superior quality product in a sustainable manner.
TPI: How are sustainability expectations from customers or regulators translating into changes in manufacturing practices or material choices?
GV: Sustainability is now integral to manufacturing practices-and rightly so. In fact, in our manufacturing approach at Lalbaba, we view sustainability not just as a regulatory expectation but also as a significant way for the company as well to optimise energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible sourcing. That’s why at our 7,00,000 sq. ft. Haldia facility, a 2.5 MW rooftop solar PV system has been installed, contributing significantly to our power requirements. By eliminating fossil fuel combustion, this results in zero direct emissions, no soot, and no smoke, while creating a cleaner and safer workplace. In addition, we operate a zero-liquid-discharge effluent treatment plant, where all process chemicals are treated and recycled. This ensures responsible water management and regulatory compliance, while continuing to support high-performance manufacturing.
