Fresh Oil Discovery in Krishna-Godavari Basin; ONGC Commence First Oil Extraction from Deep-Sea Project

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced that the first time oil was extracted recently from a deep-sea project located 30 kilometers off the coast of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, recently announced a new oil discovery in the Krishna-Godavari Basin, India. Mr. Puri said that the first oil was extracted, 30 kilometers off the coast of Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada, from a deep-sea project on January 7, 2024. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) commenced its ‘first oil production’ from the deep-water KG-DWN 98/2 Block in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin off the Bay of Bengal on the Kakinada coast on January 7.


Mr. Puri said, “30 kilometers off the coast of Kakinada in the Krishna Godavari Basin, the first oil was extracted yesterday. Work started on this in 2016-17, then there were some delays due to Covid, but I’m sure that out of the 26 wells there, 4 wells are already operational.”

Additionally, he said, “We will not only have gas also in a very short period, but by May and June, we hope to be able to produce 45,000 barrels per day, which will be 7 percent of our total crude oil production and 7 percent of our gas production.”
