SMS Group has received an order from Steel Authority of India to modernize its billet casting machines at Durgapur steel plant in West Bengal. This upgrade is expected to increase the plant’s capacity by more than 60 percent.

Germany-based SMS Group has received an order from Steel Authority of India to modernize its billet casting machines at Durgapur steel plant in West Bengal.
The scope of the project consists of upgrading two 6-strand, six meter billet casters to enhance casting performance for long products. This upgrade is expected to increase the plant’s capacity by more than 60 percent. Moreover, a new 150 mm X 150 mm billet section will be introduced to support the downstream production, with a possibility to produce 160 mm round billets for producing rebar and wire rods.

The project will be implemented in two phases. billet caster no. 1 will be operational in Q4 2027 and billet caster no 2 will commence operation in Q3 2028. Each casting unit will be commissioned within a defined five-month shutdown period, ensuring overall plant operations to continue without any disruptions.
