Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a subsidiary of India’s state-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has announced that it has successfully developed electrical-grade steel and manganese-boron steel.

Non-grain-oriented electrical steel is specifically designed for use in electric motors, generators, small power transformers, and rotors for hybrid and electric vehicles. The company has produced approximately 1,100 tonnes of 0.5 mm-thick LS grade electrical steel, exhibiting stable magnetic properties, thereby improving energy efficiency and reducing power loss.

BSL has simultaneously developed 28MnB5 grade manganese-boron steel. This is the first time in India that this variety of steel has been produced This specialised steel grade is primarily used in agricultural machinery and wear-resistant components as it has high strength, rigidness, and top-notch wear resistance.
