Centre Forms High-Level Panel to Fast-Track Rourkela Steel Plant Expansion

The Union Steel Ministry assembles an expert committee to resolve expansion hurdles at the USD 3.45 billion Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), boosting production capacity from  4.5 to 9 million tonnes per annum, and regional growth.

The Union Steel Ministry has decided to form a high-level committee with senior officials from the Steel Ministry, SAIL, and Odisha government. The panel will address land acquisition, infrastructure, and environmental clearances to support the ambitious doubling of Rourkela Steel Plant’s capacity from 4.5 to 9 million tonnes per annum.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan proposed the move during a meeting chaired by Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, with Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram also in attendance.

The committee is charged with coordinating efforts on railway line doubling, employment for local youth, airport land support, and time-bound solutions to project challenges, all aimed at amplifying steel output, reducing imports, and driving economic growth in Odisha.
