State-run natural gas company GAIL (India) Limited is set to commission India’s first green hydrogen project at its Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh by April, marking a pivotal milestone in the country’s sustainable energy transition.

As per an official statement, a 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyser has been imported from Canada for the production of green hydrogen. Once operational, the unit will produce around 4.3 metric tonnes of hydrogen per day, boasting a purity level of 99.999 percent by volume.

The project will rely on renewable power sources, aligning with India’s ambitious goal of reaching 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Despite initial challenges anticipated during the commissioning phase, the company anticipates swift production commencement within a month.

GAIL’s proactive strides in green hydrogen underscore its commitment to fostering technological advancements and contributing to India’s eco-friendly future. The project also marks a significant stride in the country’s pursuit of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

In a related development, the Union government recently came out with guidelines for undertaking pilot projects for using Green Hydrogen in the transport sector, reflecting a broader national commitment to sustainable innovation.
