Gujarat State Petronet has commissioned an INR 650 crore natural gas pipeline, connecting HPCL’s unit- HPCL LNG Limited’s newly established 5 million tonnes per annum LNG import terminal at Chhara in the Gir-Somnath district to the gas grid.

The pipeline runs along the outskirts of the eco-sensitive Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary. HPCL’s facility imports liquefied natural gas (LNG) from super chilled gas into liquid form for ease of transportation in ships at Chhara. The LNG is again converted into its gaseous state and transported to customers like power plants and fertilizer units through pipelines.

The engineering, procurement, and construction of the 36-inch diameter pipeline from HPCL LNG terminal at Chhara to Lothpur in Amreli district of Gujarat, including the dispatch and receiving terminals and valve stations, were assigned to Mumbai-based Ace Pipeline Contracts in September 2023. To accelerate the timeline, advanced techniques like automatic welding were used.
