India has imposed three-year import tariffs between 11-12% on some steel products being imported from China, Vietnam, and Nepal, according to the official government gazette notification issued on December 31, 2025.
The tariff is imposed based on the recommendation by DGTR that is safeguard duty to boost the domestic industry. The safeguard duty is phased as 12 percent from April 2025 to April 2026, 11.5 percent from April 2026 to April 2027, and 11 percent from April 2027 to April 2028, to curb the cheap import of steel in Indian markets and creating a levelled playing field for the domestic industry.
