The Indian Steel Association (ISA) has expressed its serious concern over the recent order passed by US President Donald Trump raising tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to a flat 25 percent.
A statement issued by ISA President and Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Naveen Jindal sought urgent intervention from the government of India on the issue, stating that the move would disrupt global trade and intensify challenges for the steel industry in the country.
The statement said the US, a major steel importer, had historically imposed strict trade restrictions, with over 30 remedial actions in force, some for more than three decades against the Indian steel industry.
Noting that the latest tariff was likely to slash steel exports to the US by 85 percent, the association said it would create a massive global steel surplus that may flood India.
Since India was currently one of the few major markets without trade restrictions, the surplus would flood the country, threatening its domestic industry with price crashes, market distortions and unfair competition.

Since India’s carbon steel exports to the US were already negligible due to long-standing anti-dumping duty (ADD) and countervailing duty (CVD) measures, the latest move could only add to the misery and aggravate the situation further.
The association asked the Central government to push for the removal of long-standing ADD & CVD duties and secure exemptions from restrictive measures.
