India witnessed an 11.3% y-o-y decline in finished steel imports in April, with volumes decreasing to 0.5 million metric tons, according to preliminary government data obtained by Reuters. This decline post the imposition of a 12% temporary import tariff aimed at curbing low-cost steel inflows in the country from other countries like China and Japan.
Imports from China plunged sharply by 26.5% to 0.1 million metric tons, while steel shipments from Japan decreased 60% to about 85,600 metric tons. On the contrary, imports from France and Germany surged unexpectedly during the same period.

In terms of production, India, which ranks as the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, produced 12.4 million metric tons of finished steel and 12.9 million metric tons of crude steel in April.
