Jindal Steel advances sustainable steelmaking using coal gasification, boosting energy security, reducing emissions, and lowering dependence on imported fuels significantly.

Jindal Steel Limited has achieved a major milestone by commissioning India’s first coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant using syngas for iron production.
The company has also successfully deployed syngas in galvanising and colour coating furnaces—an industry-first initiative, helping address shortages of natural gas and other conventional fuels.
Further strengthening its innovation leadership, Jindal Steel has introduced syngas injection into blast furnace operations, reducing reliance on imported coking coal and lowering carbon emissions per tonne of steel.
Aligned with the Government of India’s National Coal Gasification Mission, this integrated approach enhances energy self-reliance, operational efficiency, and sustainability across the steel value chain.
Commenting on the development, P. K. Biju Nair highlighted that coal-derived syngas can replace imported fuels such as LNG and methanol, supporting low-carbon growth and global competitiveness.
