This was revealed by Mr. Cesare Vernocchi, Area Sales Manager, Olimpia 80 S.r.l., during his interaction with the Tube & Pipe India magazine.
Tube & Pipe India: Kindly walk us through your business journey, highlighting major milestones and crucial achievements.
Cesare Vernocchi: Olimpia 80 is an Italian family-owned private company, which has been successfully operating in the planning and implementation of plants and equipment for the production of high-quality tubes for over 40 years. We are a leading manufacturer of complete lines and equipment for welded tubes and pipes. We provide fully engineered and customised solutions.
Every machine we produce is different from others. We manufacture custom-made equipment for our clients, thus offering high technology, high quality, user-friendliness as well as substantial reductions in manufacturing costs and highest productivity. Besides, continuous experimentation and complete knowledge of the production requirements have brought Olimpia 80 to attaining numerous and important patents. We have always paid great attention to the technical assistance and after sales service, which includes control of functioning parameters of the plant, disposition of our specialised personnel for the inspection in loco, provision of necessary components, spare parts and consumable products.
TPI: What is your USP that sets you apart from your competitors?
CV: We stay in contact with our customers, trying to understand their needs, and then start engineering the best solution together, keeping in mind the mechanical characteristics and the layout of the plant. After knowing the requirements of our customers, we begin the engineering process of the machine and machine parts inside our premises, start the production, assemble the line, test the line, and finally, deliver it to the customers. The technician goes to the customers’ site, installs the machine, puts it in operation, trains the operator and helps him achieve the desired goal. Our job finishes only when the customers are able to produce exactly the quality of tubes required by them.
We also have a company specialised in welded tube manufacturing for stainless steel named Olimpia Inox. The company specialises in stainless steel tubes welded by laser. This gives us an opportunity to test our idea before implementing it.
Olimpia 80 counts on an experienced professional team distinguished for its great technical projecting capacity, which is constantly perfected inside the company. Experience, matured in the years of studying and realisation of plants for tube production, is combined with modern resources of the technical department, which has at its disposal the most evolutionary programs of elaboration and industrial design proposed by the market.
Each system is connected via modem with our service centre, in order to accelerate the time of diagnosis for the identification and repair of any faults. A modem laboratory inside Olimpia 80, equipped with the latest instruments, makes it possible to carry out real time checks and analysis of materials used, in compliance with the specifications agreed. One of the fundamental characteristics of Olimpia 80 is its disposition to take care of the personnel intended for handling operation of the mills supplied by it.
TPI: What is your manufacturing setup and production capacity of your plant?
CV: We specialise in engineering, manufacturing and installation of tube mills for both carbon steel tubes and stainless steel tubes. We can manufacture a maximum of 12 complete tube mills per year, depending on the size. With our production capacity, we can cover a wide range of tubes from OD 5 mm to OD 450 mm, depending on the order. We don’t keep stock of our products, but produce only on order. Our main product last year was the direct forming technology for square and rectangular tubes, as well as for round tubes. Two of our products patented by us were presented in the market a few years ago and today, we have finally arrived at a good level of sales for this product.

TPI: Please share information about recent developments at your company, including new products and technologies.
CV: We have two innovative products. One is an automatic sizing and turks head section engineered specifically for an existing tube mill to our customers in north Europe. We remove the older part of the existing tube. We install the fully automatic new part without the need to change any rolls. There is a direct forming for this specific application. The second is an orbital cut off engineered for the end of the stainless steel tube mills. You can use the technology for seamless tube mills also, but at the moment, it can only be used for stainless steel tube mills. We engineered the application with a roughing coherent fibre laser source. This is the fourth machine that we have produced. Three of these are already installed and the customer is very happy with them.
TPI: What is the vision of your company for the future?
CV: We want to increase and improve our presence continuously in a special sector. We have the best technology and rich experience, which we offer to all our customers. Our interest is to stay in the market and sell our products all over the world. This is our goal. We have been able to sell a lot of products across the globe in the last few years and plan to continue doing the same in future. We don’t have any kind of limits due to any barrier or convention.

TPI: Please shed some light on your market footprint and clientele.
CV: In the last couple of years, we worked well in Central and South America, mostly for automotive industries and carbon steel tubes. We have very good customers in India for carbon steel tubes and have several customers distributed all over the world, including in East Europe, North Europe, Asia and Africa. In Europe, we have customers for carbon steel and stainless steel.
We see potential in the market for heat exchangers for laser applications or TIG welding for stainless steel tubes. This market has witnessed robust growth in the last few years and is expected to remain steady in the coming years.

TPI: Kindly give information about your Indian customers.
CV: Our main customers are APL Apollo Tubes Limited and Ratnamani Metals and Tubes Limited, who rely on us mostly for their stainless steel products. We also have some other customers in India. In the last 25 years, we have been working a lot in India. The Indian market is not easy for us but when customers require top quality and are not ready to compromise on quality, then we can compete with other manufacturers.
