Tata Steel has completed the second phase of expansion at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha, increasing the plant’s annual crude steel production capacity from 3 million tonnes to 8 million tonnes, with an investment of INR 27,000 crore.

Tata Steel has completed a major expansion at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha’s Jajpur district, significantly increasing the plant’s annual crude steel production capacity from 3 million tonnes to 8 million tonnes. The second phase of the project, which commenced in November 2018, involved an investment of INR 27,000 crore.
The expansion has increased Tata Steel’s total installed crude steel capacity in India to 26.1 million TPA. The company planned to utilize its enhanced production capabilities to meet the growing demand in critical sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, energy, defence, and shipbuilding.
CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, Mr. TV Narendran, stressed on the importance of development, noting that the Kalinganagar facility represented more than just a manufacturing center, it was a reflection of successful collaboration between the private sector, government, and local communities. He also reiterated the company’s long-standing commitment to Odisha as a strategic investment destination.

Key infrastructure upgrades in the project included the commissioning of a 5,870 cubic meter blast furnace, the largest in the country, as well as enhancements across the plant’s raw material handling systems, upstream (pellet plant & coke plant) and midstream processing units, and the establishment of a cold rolling mill complex for downstream operations.
