Tata Steel Unveils Expansion Roadmap for Over 40 MTPA Capacity Expansion

Tata Steel Limited has outlined an ambitious growth strategy to expand its crude steel production capacity in India to over 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the current ~27.4 MTPA, reinforcing its focus on meeting the country’s long-term steel demand.

Tata Steel Limited has outlined an ambitious growth strategy to expand its crude steel production capacity in India to over 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the current ~27.4 MTPA. 

As part of the expansion plan presented at its 119th Annual General Meeting, Tata Steel announced that it will add 4.8 MTPA at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. (NINL), 2.5 MTPA of steel capacity at Tata Steel Meramandali (TSM), and develop a 6 MTPA greenfield steel plant in Maharashtra.

The company  is also strengthening its downstream business by significantly expanding value-added steel capacities. The company plans to increase its tube manufacturing capacity from 1.7 MTPA to 4 MTPA, wire capacity from 0.6 MTPA to 1 MTPA, and tinplate capacity from 0.4 MTPA to 1 MTPA. In addition, it will establish a 0.7 MTPA Hot Rolled Pickling and Galvanising Line (HRPGL) complex.

The planned investments reflect Tata Steel’s strategy to deepen its presence in high-value downstream products while capitalising on India’s growing infrastructure, construction, automotive and manufacturing demand.
