Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy has inaugurated a state-of-the-art steel-making unit at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), underscoring the facility’s growing role in Odisha’s industrial and economic development. He was accompanied by Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram during a two-day visit to the city.
The highlight of the visit was the commissioning of ‘Caster-4’ at Steel Melting Shop-2, a major milestone in RSP’s modernization programme. SAIL has previously outlined plans to expand RSP’s capacity to nearly 9 million tonnes per annum, more than double its current output, through a large-scale INR 30,000-crore expansion project. The upgrade is expected to enhance supply to critical sectors including defence, oil & gas, and automotive.

As one of India’s largest state-owned steel producers, SAIL remains central to the country’s industrial and infrastructure ambitions.
