Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has revealed that Uttar Pradesh will soon have 100 compressed bio-gas plants (CBG) plants.

Inaugurating a CBG plant set up by the Indian Oil in Uttar Pradesh, the Union Minister said the government has already granted approval to setting up of 37 such plants.

As per Mr. Puri, the initiative was in line with the government’s goal to reduce import dependency by 10 percent, while focusing on second-generation (2G) bio refineries and compressed bio-gas plants.

Uttar Pradesh currently has 10 CBG facilities.

Set up with an investment of Rs 165 crore, the CBG plant by Indian Oil will daily utilize 200 metric tonnes of agricultural residue, 20 metric tonnes of press mud, and 10 metric tonnes of cow dung. It will produce about 20 metric tonnes of bio-gas and 125 metric tonnes of organic fertilizer daily, thereby aiding in bolstering agricultural productivity.

Lauding the Green Hydrogen Policy started by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Mr. Puri said he was expecting substantial investments in this sector. He further revealed plans to establish green hydrogen plants in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district.

He said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, the number of gas connections has surged from 14 crore in 2014 to 32 crore presently.

As per Mr. Puri, the Ujjwala scheme launched in 2016 has provided free gas connections to 10 crore women, including eight crore rural women.

Earlier, the Oil Minister had said that the Government of India has set a target to increase the share of gas in the energy mix up to 15 percent in 2030 to make India a Gas-based economy.

He revealed India’s ambitious target to set up 5,000 commercial plants by 2024- 25 and produce 15 MMT of CBG, which would replace other gaseous fuels being used in the country.

He mentioned that India had commissioned 46 compressed biogas plants under SATAT Scheme and there were 100 outlets currently dispensing the compressed biogas across the country.

The government further planned to introduce mandatory blending of CBG in domestic compressed natural gas and piped natural gas to cut India’s reliance on expensive imports of liquified natural gas (LNG), he added.
