In a bid to cut greenhouse gas emissions, a plan has been approved by the Government of Norway to connect Equinor’s Hammerfest LNG plant to the national power grid. Under this plan, Norway’s gas power plant which is the largest single source of carbon dioxide will be shut down by 2030 and will be replaced with renewable energy. It has been estimated that Equinor could save 850,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. According to the Government of Norway, this plan will create job opportunities and in order to offer more grid connections the development of new renewable power sources will be done in the northernmost region. A total investment of USD 1.3 billion could be made by Equinor and its partners to electrify and upgrade the plant, extending its operations by about 10 years.
