Shyam Metalics & Energy Limited, leading metal producer of India, has officially commissioned a new blast furnace and launched a sinter plant at its Jamuria facility in West Bengal to meet the growing demand for high-quality steel products across various industries.

As per the company, the technological advancements, entailing an investment of INR 600 crore,  were aimed at lowering manufacturing costs, improving operational efficiency, and expanding its production capabilities.

The blast furnace, having a volume of 550 cubic meters, has been equipped with three top-fired stoves, modern coal dust injection technology, and a dry gas cleaning plant to optimize the steelmaking process. The furnace was expected to increase the plant’s steel production capacity by 0.77 MTPA from the previous level of 0.45 MTPA, improving margins by approximately INR 700 per MTPA.

Along with the blast furnace, Shyam Metalics opened a 1.11 MTPA sinter plant to convert iron ore fines into a feedstock that could be used in the blast furnace. The plant would use high-temperature hot blast (1200 degree C) and high peak pressure (1.5 bar) technology, allowing for increased coal infusion and energy savings.

An extra 10 per cent energy recovery has been provided by the plant’s 18 MW Top Gas Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT) to increase operating efficiency. Compared to traditional systems, a specialized evaporative cooling system used around 20 per cent less water and electricity. As part of the company’s expansion goal, the facility has also been built for zero process water discharge, maximizing process efficiency.
