Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has entered into a strategic partnership with Captain Steel India Limited, leading manufacturers of integrated TMT bars, to set up a state-of-the-art steel plant in Garbeta town of West Bengal, entailing an investment of INR 2,500 crore.
The greenfield project, having an annual production capacity of 0.8 million tonnes, is expected to commence operations within the next 18 to 20 months.
Addressing reporters recently, Ganguly said that they have started seeking approvals for the facility, including environmental, pollution and other governmental clearances.
As per media sources, the project, expected to come up at approximately 350 acres of land, showcased a collaborative effort between sports and industry to foster economic growth and infrastructure development in the region. It would also bring a notable advancement in the state’s industrial landscape.
The plant was initially slated to come up at Salboni village in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, however, due to lack of raw material linkages, it has been shifted to Garbeta, around 26 kilometres from the original site.
