SAIL emerges as the largest steel supplier for the Zojila Tunnel, India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, boosting all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.
Jul 22, 2025

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel, comprising TMT re-bars, structurals, and plates, for the Zojila Tunnel project, making it the single largest steel contributor to this critical infrastructure. The 30-km tunnel, under construction at 11,578 feet altitude, is set to be completed by 2027.
The Zojila tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil, significantly enhancing both civilian and military access in the region. It forms a vital part of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway and is considered a strategic lifeline for Ladakh.
