India Plans to Boost High Grade Steel to Reduce Import Dependence

Union minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy said that India is stepping up to produce high-grade special steel to reduce the country’s dependence on import and utilize it for India’s automotive, defence and other strategic sectors.

India is stepping up to produce high-grade special steel to reduce the country’s dependence on imports, says Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy at the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

This high-grade steel will be critical for India’s automotive, defence and other strategic sectors, especially with the increase in the number of infrastructural projects. The government is also supporting this initiative with the PLI scheme attracting around USD 3.5 billion for creating special steel. The fiscal incentives will expand the capacity of high-grade special steel.
