Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has kick-started the expansion of its IISCO Steel Plant in West Bengal, after receiving the environmental clearance. The new facility will manufacture advanced steel grades for the automobile and consumer durables sectors.

SAIL has commenced the expansion and modernisation of its IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal, following environmental clearance on June 4, 2025.
The INR 45,810.92 crore project involves constructing a new plant with a capacity of 4.6 million tonnes per annum, increasing the total capacity to 7.1 million tonnes per annum by 2029. Unlike the existing mill producing bars and rods, the new facility will manufacture advanced steel grades for the automobile and consumer durables sectors.
This initiative is poised to be the largest industrial investment in a single project in West Bengal, generating significant economic opportunities, particularly in the Asansol-Durgapur region.

The upcoming advanced facility will include- a hot strip mill (HSM), pickling line coupled to tandem cold mill (PLTCM), continuous galvanising line (CGL), continuous annealing line (CAL), and colour coated line (CCL).
