Tata Steel plans to produce 10-15 million tonnes of steel annually through recycling by 2040, as part of its sustainability strategy, according to CEO and MD T.V. Narendran.

In FY25, Tata Steel produced 30.92 million tonnes of steel across its global operations, which include facilities in India, the UK, the Netherlands, and Thailand. The company aims to increase its steelmaking capacity to 40 million tonnes by 2030 in India.

“…linearity to circularity is one shift we are making…. you will see in the next 10-15 years, 10-15 million tonnes of Tata Steel’s production will be through the recycling route,” Narendran said when asked about his vision on sustainability for Tata Steel.

In line with its green transition, Tata Steel has closed its blast furnaces in the UK and is constructing an electric arc furnace at its Port Talbot plant. The company is also setting up a 0.75 million tonne recycling-based steelmaking unit in Ludhiana, expected to be operational by the end of this financial year. By 2035, Tata Steel plans to produce 10 million tonnes of steel in Europe using alternative, greener processes.
