Tata Steel commissioned the country’s largest blast furnace in Kalinganagar in September, positioning the company to boost its total domestic steel production capacity to 26.6 million tonnes annually.

Tata Steel increased its steel production in India by 5% year-on-year in Q2 FY 2024-25, reaching 5.27 million tonnes during July-September 2024, according to the Financial Express. For the first half of FY 2024-25, Tata Steel India’s total production rose by 5% year-on-year to 10.53 million tonnes.

Internationally, Tata Steel Netherlands produced 1.68 million tons of steel in the same quarter, while Tata Steel UK’s output dropped by 50% year-on-year to 0.38 million tonnes. Shipments from the UK also fell by 12.3%, down to 0.64 million tonnes. On September 30, 2024, Tata Steel shut down its last blast furnace at the Port Talbot plant, ceasing pig iron and primary steel production in the UK.

Meanwhile, in India, it successfully commissioned the country’s largest blast furnace in Kalinganagar in September 2024, positioning the company to boost its total domestic steel production capacity to 26.6 million tonnes annually.

Amid challenging market conditions in Europe, its Dutch subsidiary announced cost-cutting measures in September 2024. The European market faces significant overcapacity, low steel prices, and cautious customer demand, particularly affecting the automotive industry, which directly impacts the steelmakers.
