Tata Steel Ltd. has achieved a key milestone by rolling its first coils at the Jamshedpur CSP® plant in Jharkhand following an extensive modernization project carried out by SMS group. The upgrade marks a significant step toward enhancing product quality and operational efficiency.
As part of the revamp, a new F7 finishing stand was installed, along with a complete renewal of X-Pact® automation hardware and software systems. These improvements enable the mill to manufacture thinner gauges and higher-grade steel products, meeting evolving market demands.
The CSP® facility, originally commissioned in 2011 with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons, produces hot-rolled strips ranging from 900 to 1,680 mm in width and 1 to 16 mm in thickness. The modernization also optimized roll-changing systems and improved rolling load distribution to handle harder materials at wider widths.

Additional enhancements included the modernization of mill stands F1 to F5, reinforced cooling systems, installation of SIEFLEX® gear-type spindles, and deployment of advanced X-Pact® ProBAS automation. These upgrades ensure precise rolling schedules, superior cooling control, and improved strip flatness, further strengthening Tata Steel’s production capabilities.
