IISCO Steel Plant (SAIL) in Burnpur has awarded SMS group, in a consortium with MECON Limited, to supply a new stamp charged coke oven battery in Burnpur in Paschim Burdwan District of West Bengal. This turnkey coke oven project includes a 6.25-meter-high Stamp Charging Battery, coke oven machines, as well as the CokeXpert® Level 2 system for automatic battery heating control.
The coke oven battery will feature 60 ovens, divided into two blocks of 30 ovens each, and two Stamping-Charging-Pushing Machines (SCPM) based on Paul Wurth stamping technology, which ensures homogeneous coal density and high coal cake stability, setting new benchmarks for coke-making in India.
The new Stamp Charging Battery n° 12 will produce 0.76 million tonnes per annum of high-quality coke to meet the requirements of IISCO’s blast furnaces.
By leveraging an advanced combustion system, the plant will achieve low NOx emissions through waste gas recirculation, air staging and high-heat transfer liner brick which, together with high efficiency regenerator chambers will ensure a low fuel consumption for the coal carbonization process.
This environment friendly and efficient technology represents a significant step forward compared to conventional coke-making methods used in India today.
Marco Asquini, CEO of SMS India Private Limited , at SMS group, said, “The history of collaboration between SAIL and SMS dates back to 1952, having developed several plants together. The project is considered a major milestone in the growth of the Indian steel industry and represents a new feather for SAIL.”

SAIL-IISCO stated during the signing ceremony to the press, “This project is notable for being the first stamp charge battery, Coke Oven Battery (COB) #12 for SAIL’s IISCO facility and holds significance for the SMS group in the coke-making area.”
Currently, IISCO Burnpur operates two top-charging coke oven batteries. The addition of this new stamp charging battery will not only enhance production capacity but also introduce cutting-edge technology to the Indian public sector. This project underscores SMS group’s position as a technology leader in the global stamp charging coke oven market.
