Tata Steel UK is set to start construction of its new 3.2 million TPA electric arc furnace (EAF) facility in Port Talbot, UK, by July 2025.

Proclaimed to be among the largest EAF installations globally, the plant will utilize scrap metal sourced within the UK to produce low-emission, premium steel. The initiative will significantly reduce the need to import vast quantities of coal and iron ore, traditionally used in blast furnace operations.

The Indian steel giant revealed in its FY24-25 annual report that it has secured all major approvals for the project, as well as funding of around USD 676.7 million (500 million pounds) from the UK government to support the transition.

The facility will offer a lower-CO2 alternative to the traditional blast furnace method, with operations expected to commence by 2027. Tata Steel aims to cut the site’s CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent (50 million tonnes) and UK’s overall carbon emissions by about 1.5 percent with the plant.

As per Tata Steel, it has already shut down its two ageing blast furnaces at Port Talbot and shifted to a downstream supply model, sourcing steel substrates from its operations in India, the Netherlands, and other suppliers to meet customer demand in the UK.
